The Legacy of La Malinche Opens
Traitor, Survivor, Icon | Albuquerque Museum
The Albuquerque Museum opens the exhibit Traitor, Survivor, Icon: The Legacy of La Malinche today with a presentation by the curators and many of the artists participating in this deep dive into the life and legacy of this very real teenage girl who became the direct point of contact between Cortes and the indigenous people of the Aztec Empire as Tenochtitlan fell to the Spanish in 1519. Much has been said about this young woman over the last five hundred years. A slave given to Cortes, she became his interpreter and the mother of his child. Revered and reviled. How would the Americas have developed without her? We will be looking into this exhibit, the artists involved and the questions raised in future editions of The Albuquerque Courier.
